Depeche Mode Go Supernova
Depeche Mode: Sounds Of The Universe, Mute
By SIOBHAN MURPHY - Friday, April 17, 2009
Depeche Mode's 12th studio album bears a suitably bombastic title: nearly 30 years into
their career, they're Essex boys gone supernova.
While their longevity, fame and occasional rock pomp bears comparison to U2, Depeche are
more interestingly bruised; they've publicly sustained breakdowns, and few artists play
the tortured soul with as much panache as frontman Dave Gahan.
Here the trio perform to their strengths; Gahan is deliciously seductive yet foreboding on
Corrupt and the single Wrong.
Martin Gore's songwriting and Andy Fletcher's instrumentation are on exquisite,
experimental form, whether it's Fragile Tension's vital electro-pop or the grand synth
ceremonial of Peace.
